Nickel plating is a galvanic treatment that occurs through the conversion of anode nickels into nickel ions. The nickel ions pass through the nickel-plating solution and are discharged onto the surface of the nickel-plated workpiece (cathode), where they are converted back to nickel metal.
Black Nickel Plating is used for decorative purposes as it does not have high protection qualities due to the thin deposits that are made. It also gives the treated surfaces an unmistakable glossy and black appearance that can be best appreciated on cadmium and zinc objects.
Coppering as a metal protection process plays a very used and important role as, while it does not provide a protective coating as an end in itself, it does provide an optimal intermediate layer for subsequent processing: Nickel plating.
